“carved in whispers”

our doors lie open wounded

driven like the dust of papered worlds

a brilliantly tattered totem

so ornately carved in whispers

and on the tips of tongues

upon the tops of pillars

they are but simple prayers

flowing from our lips like vapor

such evidence as we have found

for it was written in the stars

and printed in the papers

it was pressed below our tables

in the hands of mystics and soothsayers

like prisons we possessed them

we trapped their sweetness between layers

and here alone we travel

to our backyard garden swings

the air of smoke so thick and full of dreams

with our hands we try to catch them

so we may discover what remains

but as we hold them in our lungs

they shall take our only breath

for they are faster and they savor

those simple songs that dance in shadow

like broken leaves along the ground

sweetly rustling in the evening

and when our mornings come

we expect to capture them once more

but forever we have lost them

and never again shall they be found

“beyond the whisping clouds”

swollen hearts tumble in the old fashioned way

they are consumed by the fires of eternity

but this is a day of reprieves

the plumes of early summer heat have momentarily abated

and in this sweetened break of time

cool fragrant breezes run like softened pebbles under your feet

the grasses seem to live and breathe

birds tell stories from their twiggy homes

and for the first time

you understand the yarns they weave

oh how i wonder

just what this night will bring

shall it be this day’s cool cousin

dressed in faded blues

will fires work the sky

above our silken flags

will the moon be cut just right

beyond the whisping clouds

why all these things i ask of you

they somewhat matter not

for what i wish to know is grandeur

your face in the waning light

and perhaps a kiss between us

before you take your starry flight

“fireflies and sheep”

fireflies swim in their oceans of sky

and warm dandelion breaths cast a cottony snow

their thin waxy stems like sweet summer girls

they dance in my yard and all through the world

here in the draft of some beautiful scent

oh how i wonder

where will they go?

their footsteps in summer

violet toes in the grass

and the trickles of laughter

how they drift like a stream

through my ears like windows open

now un-shuttered to reveal

what those whispering lips

and those cool shaded eyes

once did so guardedly conceal

so now i must choose

shall it be the stars or the lights?

i am breathing the wind

and in the evening while i sleep

in my hammock just woven

i will swing from those branches

the ones just out of reach

there on the moon…

by the fence…

counting sheep

“together”

she is waiting at your doorway
with all the colors in her hair
and all her bracelets tangled
taking steps
ever so slightly forward
dizzy in the rarified air
two little creatures bracing
unsteadied by the cobbles and stones
what wild nights await you
here in the lights and the snow
daydreaming like daisies
without petals
in the early spring glow
seeking out the smallest of ironies
tuned like a bow
drawn across the strings of your heart
in a swift, radiating glance
eyes like lenses of rapture
invested in a world without features
a cold and whisper-less expanse
known only to lovers
alone on their islands
dreaming in time that drifts like the sand
moving together like water
as tiny drops that glisten and burst
lost forever in the darkness
in the strangeness of this verse
and when you remember
how she saw you that night
on the steps
in the starlight
you will make her a promise
cool, solemn and sincere
that you shall always be together
in the depths of the far
for love’s weighted anchor
is buried deep in your breast
like a song surviving centuries
filled with words true and simple
and of limitless tone
a life lived together
whether in sweetness or bitter
will always be greater
than a life lived alone

“beginners”

on heads on hearts

on beds

apart

in the death

are the catacombs

and the dark

where spirits lay

to find your soul

your mate

to be taken

from this place

on chests

resting softly

hands touching

so far apart

and knowing

the ways of differing arts

on mending

your days

a pillar of soft dust

in a thrilling display

to capture

and corner

and savor her ways

from lust

and longing

the fragile one fraying

on knees

and bended

before her touch

to wonder

not knowing

what there

lies beneath

a canopy of stars

to cradle and swoon

beneath her arms

clutching and bare

so it should be

on minds on matters

this feeling of freedom

in windows that shatter

and when that day comes

a vision in tatters

you will not be alone

but in the arms of strangers

“transit of venus”

calm wind

fly from stars

to the radio head

identify the tranquil beat

conjure the vibrant ring

and wait

for the transit is coming

planets sprinting across the face of the sun

a spot on the eye

the distance to be reckoned

catch now as catch can

or be lost for a hundred years

falling through this emptiness of mine

waiting for the band

in the darkness of sound

and when the stage lights

they grow and throb

look for the bright eyed faces

and the swaying of the crowd

for these are anniversaries

to mark the union of souls

born of astronomical degree

and when the sextant marks out the line

we will know the distance gathered

and the passage of time…

“for lauren”

in the falling season
trees scatter their lost children about the ground
they form road-side memorials that dress the streets
there final days spent in shades of blood and turmeric
as winter takes its grip on land and shore
they frost and crumble like morning scones at your bedside
the seasons flow on like some western surveyor
and we feel the chill of northern lights upon us
together we sip pinot in the evening glow of muted lamps
a bundle of threadbare blankets stashed safely in the wardrobe
tales of old are spun like so much yarn on your grandmother’s lap
and together we come to part the sorrows
grey days seem a continuum
darkness falls early and slow slumber awaits
but we welcome her
our spring darling beauty
dressed in alpine meadow colors
and we venture to the sea for relief
the salt spray and southern breezes make us whole again
around the table gathering conversation grows
and leaves are born again to mothering oaks
we raise our glasses high
and scrape the splinters from our fresh broken chop sticks
this evening will bring dinner and talk of travels
summer awaits in all her glory
for we are her progeny
and she
our savior

“for katie”

there is a picture on the wall
and the beauty it contains dangles like a curl
it flows through the room like wine from a forgotten cask
invoking ageless emotions only found in the eyes of a lonesome puppy
years have come and years have gone since the day it took shape
like a pure sonnet or a dancer on stage we never tire of it
i have seen this before
on distant walls
in distant homes
that span the length and breadth of our country
a land full of children and toys
a land of letters and words
they connect the sorrow and the joy of hearts separated
the indestructible bonds that shine like white teeth in the afternoon sun
we are all here now
as we shall always be
we have stitched an everlasting tapestry of friends
and we frame them like captured butterflies in a dusty museum hall
but as always we come together for those certain occasions
creating new visions of our future
dancing to the music of laughter
and feasting on the essence of togetherness
always remember these days
spent on couches and spinning cars
these are the days to remember
and they will never die

“for linda”

memories flow like a swift torrent of water
chasing some unspoken promise
with the speed of a subterranean river
and the power of a million spinning prayer wheels
they radiate the sound of love across the heart-born expanse
they twist like baby dancers in the far recesses of your soul
and then…
you remember
father was the maker of memories
he taught you all the things that the maiden forbid
he was the iron cross when the storms came
and the giver of sweet kisses when all things felt wrong
now you rest and remember
life as it were
you sit by the leaf, by the axe, by the pile
warmed by the air of the wood by the fire
and father is still there…
somewhere?
he celebrates his creation for all eternity
he thinks of you…

“for becky”

the sands of time flow in luscious curves
california mountains set the pace of glowing streams
vines grow a hundred years deep
to tap the soulful waters that fell so many years ago
and you walk the line of migration
falling through huckleberry trails
surrounded by misty mornings
picking the fruit of the twisted vine
it all falls in rows
wondering wild beneath a canopy of jade
couples snuggle by the fading fire light
they are wrapped in a blanket of stars
and in the foreign morning they wake
stirred by the willow branches thrashing in the wind
the new day calls for them
the fruits of their labor to be found
they pop the cork of the tawny red
and drink the tears of angels
